SCIENCE INVESTIGATION
Volcano
(Ideal for children from Year 3 upwards.)
You will need:
-10 ml of washing up liquid
- cold water
-400 ml of white vinegar
-empty 2 litre bottle
-1/2 a cup of baking soda
-some food colouring of you have it
What to do:
Do this outside as it can get messy!
1. Mix the vinegar, 100ml of water, dish soap and 2 drops of food colouring into the empty bottle.
2. To make the baking soda slurry fill a cup about ½ with baking soda, then fill the rest of the way with water.
3. Use a spoon to mix the baking soda and water until it is all a liquid.
4. Now it is eruption time! … Pour the baking soda mixture into the bottle quickly and step back! The science bit: A chemical reaction takes place between the baking soda and the vinegar. When they mix, it produces a gas called carbon dioxide. There is not enough room for the gas in the bottle so it will shoot out of the top.
Additional task: Change the amount of vinegar or baking soda and see if the eruption is altered in any way.
