Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) and Relationship Health Education (RHE)
At Bowlee Park School, we recognise the importance of creating a supportive learning environment that promotes the emotional, personal and social development of every child. Through our PSHE curriculum, children develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills needed to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives and achieve their full potential.
We aim to help our pupils become responsible and active members of society by encouraging them to make positive contributions to school life and the wider community.
Relationship Health Education (RHE)
As part of our PSHE curriculum, we teach Relationships and Health Education (RHE). RHE provides children with age-appropriate learning about:
Our PSHE Curriculum
We use the SCARF programme (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship) from EYFS to Year 6 as the foundation of our PSHE curriculum. The programme has been adapted to reflect the context of our school community and the needs of our pupils.
The curriculum is organised into six units:
Alongside SCARF, we also use myHappymind to further support children's mental health, wellbeing and personal development.
MyHappymind is built around five key units:
Meet My Brain
Children learn how their brain works and how to look after it so they can understand and manage their emotions and feel at their best. Growth mindset is also a key part of this unit, helping children understand that their abilities can develop through effort, learning and perseverance.
Celebrate
Children discover their own unique character strengths and learn to recognise and celebrate what makes them special. This is a fantastic module for developing self-esteem, confidence and self-awareness.
Appreciate
Children explore why gratitude matters and learn practical ways to develop gratitude as a habit. Gratitude can play an important role in supporting wellbeing and resilience, and we encourage children to make it part of everyday life.
Relate
Children learn why positive relationships matter and explore how to build and maintain them. We focus on the building blocks of healthy relationships and friendships, including understanding others, communicating positively and showing kindness.
Engage
Children learn how to set meaningful goals that matter to them and how to stay resilient when faced with challenges. This unit supports children in developing self-esteem, motivation and resilience, helping them to approach challenges with confidence and perseverance.
Through PSHE and RHE, we aim for all children to:
Rights Respecting and Healthy School
Our PSHE curriculum is closely linked to our commitment to being a Rights Respecting School and an Enhanced Healthy School. Promoting children's wellbeing is central to our ethos and underpins all aspects of school life.
Updated Relationship Health Education Guidance
Relationships Health Education has been statutory in primary schools in England since 2020.
The Department for Education published updated statutory RHE guidance in 2025, with the revised guidance becoming statutory from September 2026.
There are very few changes to our current curriculum, as much of the updated content is already delivered through our existing PSHE programme.
The revised guidance places a greater emphasis on:
The SCARF/myHappymind Programmes
We deliver our PSHE and RSHE curriculum using Coram SCARF, a comprehensive programme designed to support children's relationships, health, wellbeing and personal development. Alongside SCARF, we also use myHappymind to support children's emotional wellbeing, resilience and positive mental health. myHappymind helps children develop an understanding of their emotions, build confidence and self-esteem, and develop healthy habits and positive relationships.
The programmes provide:

Why Relationships and Health Education Matters?
High-quality PSHE and RHE education gives children important knowledge and practical skills that support them both in school and throughout their lives.
It helps children to:
RHE also has an important safeguarding role. By teaching children about body safety, appropriate boundaries, respectful relationships and how to seek support, we help them develop the confidence and knowledge to keep themselves safe.
